Southern Sanur extends southward along the coastline and inland towards the JI Bypass Ngurah Rai Road. The area includes beachfront properties, shops, restaurants, and residential areas.

Its end is near the Mertasari Beach area, where the beachfront properties gradually give way to more open coastal landscapes.

If someone asked me about the best area in Sanur, I would highly recommend Southern Sanur because of its beachfront accommodation options, located close to shops, and places to eat. You can walk out the gate at Prama or Puri Santrian onto Ji Cemara and have dining options in all directions. You could choose Warung Baby Monkeys or Vietnamese at Mi Vui, and morning coffee at the Bare Bottle

• They serve authentic Italian cuisine, including homemade pasta, pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, and fresh salads.
• Massimo caters to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets, ensuring everyone can enjoy a delicious meal.
• It is known to have the best gelato in Sanur, and both locals and tourists queue outside to try its ever-changing flavours.

While reservations aren’t mandatory, they are recommended, especially during peak season or for larger groups. The restaurant is located on Jalan Danau Tamblingan 228. Massimo offers good value for money, focusing on fresh ingredients and flavorful dishes.

We can highly recommend the spring rolls, satay skewers, and nasi goreng for a perfect, satisfying, and affordable meal. Warung Baby Monkeys is an excellent choice for budget-conscious travellers or those seeking a no-frills taste of Balinese cuisine.

In our case, we have our driver bring us straight here from the airport, It is like a tradition to have a beer at the Sanur Beer Garden as soon as we arrive. This popular spot is famous for solo travellers, couples, or groups who like trying craft beers and good food.

What to expect at the Sanur Beer Garden:

• Extensive beer selection: Indulge in a wide range of craft beers, both local and international, on tap and in bottled options. Try something unique like the snakebite, half cider and half stout beer.
• International and Indonesian Fare: Savour a menu featuring international favourites like burgers and pizzas alongside delicious Indonesian dishes. Don’t miss their unique poolside snack options (availability may vary).
• Lively atmosphere: Enjoy live music on some nights and a relaxed ambience that encourages mingling with other travellers.
• Swimming pool fun (Bonus!): Take a refreshing dip in the on-site swimming pool, a welcome perk on a hot Bali day (availability may vary). Yep, a beer garden with a swimming pool!

Sanur Beer Garden offers a laid-back dining experience. Reservations are likely not required, but the place can be crowded in the evenings when live music or sports are on the big screen.

• Consider their outdoor seating if enjoying the Sanur breeze is a priority.

A visit to Sanur Beer Garden (Jl. Danau Poso No.98-38) is a must, even if it’s just to taste some of the local beers made in Sanur.

You will easily find plenty more options for food and drinks in Sanur at places like Studja Di Pantai, Tapha, The Fire Station, and Red Manna. If you’re missing home and home is Australia or England, the Fires Station does an amazing Sunday Roast. Make sure you book in or you will miss out.

Things to see and do in South Sanur

Enjoy the beaches of Southern Sanur, with the beach path making it perfect for strolls and stunning sunrises. Some larger hotels and resorts offer guests and the public water activities such as jet skis, banana boats, paddleboards, surfing lessons, fishing, and more.

You can hire push bikes along the Sanur Beach path or from shops on JI Cemara, such as Blue Wheels bike rentals. The beach here is also cleaner and less crowded, offering a nice view of Nusa Penida and Lembongan islands.

If you are interested in the local culture, you can visit the temple, Pura Belanjong. Don’t miss the beautiful mangrove forest and the turtle conservation centre on Serangan Island. Here, you can see and learn about the endangered sea turtles that are rescued and rehabilitated.

Southern Sanur is undoubtedly not a shopper’s paradise like Seminyak or Kuta, but it offers local finds and a relaxed atmosphere without being pressured. Here’s a glimpse into what awaits you:

The heart of local treasures: Sanur Art Market

• Location: Ji Cemara, just up from the roundabout.
• What to expect: This undercover market has a few aisles of local crafts and typical souvenirs you will find all over Bali. Generally, it is not really busy, so you can take your time, look around, and barter for a bargain.
• Tips: Bring cash (rupiah) for the best deals, and remember to pack a reusable shopping bag to reduce waste.

You will find this fixed-price shop in Sanur just past the roundabout on the left hand side. If you are staying at the southern end of Sanur this may be one of the only options you have for fixed price shopping.

Nuii Collections

Sari is the owner of the shop and she was lovely as soon as I walked in. I had no idea it was here and it was a great surprise.

It is a small shop jam-packed with items. There is a small changing room, and the shop is air-conditioned.

Beyond the Sanur Art Market:

• Boutiques with a Twist: Scattered throughout Southern Sanur, you’ll find charming boutiques offering a curated selection of clothing, jewellery, and homeware. Look for locally-made designs and unique souvenirs beyond typical tourist trinkets.

Things to Remember:

• Haggling: Haggling is expected at most souvenir stalls and markets. Do your research beforehand to get a general idea of fair prices.

The Big Garden Corner – Sanur travel tips for families

Address: Sanur, Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai, Kesiman, Sanur

Big Garden Corner features a mix of things for families visiting Sanur to see and do. You follow a path that winds through different spaces where you will see giant statues of Hindu gods, miniature versions of Borobudur temples, a Japanese garden, a butterfly enclosure, and a small water park. 

The water park is more suited for families in Sanur with small kids, as it features a splash pool with small slides and water fountains. Big Garden Corner is well worth a look, but it is located away from the tourist area and will require a Grab or driver for most to access it easily.

Go to the beach in Sanur

Sanur Beach has calm waters with virtually no waves and a primarily sandy, shallow bottom, making it perfect for visiting families in Sanur. 

The long, sandy beach is ideal for cooling down on hot days in Sanur. Kids will enjoy splashing about in a safe environment. You can bring towels and sit on the sand or hire sun lounges from the many places along the beach and hire them out for a few dollars.

If you want to sit in the shade, you can find some trees towards the Hyatt on the beach.

Watersports in Sanur

Several family-friendly water sports are available on the beach. All these activities in Sanur are paid activities you can participate in from many places along Sanur Beach.

One of the most popular activities for families in Sanur is renting a jet ski. Mum or Dad can drive while the kids sit on the back as you zip up and down Sanur Beach. Jet Ski hire is next to La Playa Cafe on the beach.

On holiday in Sanur, you can go on banana and doughnut boat rides, where you get pulled behind a boat and hire a paddle board, or even go parasailing for older, more adventurous kids.

Paddleboarding is popular because kids can try it, and parents can sit kids on the front of the board if they are too little.

Most of these options are down the southern end, near Puri Santrian and the Mercure on Sanur Beach.

Sanur Kids Club

The Kids Club will be a refuge for families on vacation in Sanur. These places give the kids something to keep them occupied while we parents can relax in the shade and enjoy good food and drinks.

Two of the best hotels in Sanur with kids’ clubs are the Segara Village and the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel.

The Segara Village has swimming pools, playgrounds, and an arts and crafts program, making it one of Sanur’s best things to do with kids.

The Prama Sanur kids have both indoor and outdoor activities. The Pool at Prama features water slides and splash pools to keep kids in Sanur happy and having fun.

Playgrounds in Sanur for kids

There are several playgrounds for kids in the Sanur area. On the beach, down the south end of the beach path near the Mercure Hotel, there is an accessible open-space playground with exercise equipment if parents want to work out simultaneously.

On the Bypass Road, you will find Soho Playground, an indoor centre with a ball pit, foam pit, slides, and climbing and playing equipment. There is also a cafe onsite so that parents can relax at the same time.

Segara Playland is near the Byrd House Beach Club. It’s a covered indoor-type playground where the children of customers of Segara Seaside Bar who spend 100,000K can use it for free.

If you are looking for a snack or even lunch, Shotgun Social has a small but great playground for kids. Check out their specials board out the front for deals throughout the week.

Sea Turtles – Best family-friendly activities in Sanur

Along Sanur Beach, you will find two different turtle projects. Located on the beach path at Sindhu Beach is the Sindhu Dwarawati Turtle Conservation Centre, a tiny turtle conservation centre where turtles are kept in tanks while recuperating before being released into the ocean.

Down the south end of the beach, the Andaz Bali and Hyatt Regency Bali have launched their own small turtle conservation centres. Kids can learn about turtle conservation while being close to these fantastic sea creatures.

Eat Pizza in Sanur

Do I call eating pizza a kid’s activity in Sanur? Who knows, but I will because kids and adults love pizza.

Sanur has some of the best pizza places in Bali, and you will find nearly every second restaurant, cafe, and bar selling pizza. Some of the best places for pizza in Sanur include Pizza Goo, Forketta and Massiomos. The kids will love Massiomos, as it has a massive range of gelato. 

Eating Gelato in Sanur

Like the pizza recommendation above, Sanur has many places to get gelato. At times, we were unsure if we were in Sanur or Italy. The best place to get gelato is at Massiomos, which has an ever-changing range of over 20 flavours daily. 

The Gelato factory has two locations in Sanur, the most central of which is opposite the Artsendara Supermarket. It has a smaller but still yummy selection of ice cream worth visiting with kids. Nothing is better on a hot day in Sanur than getting a scoop or two of ice cream.

Ride bikes in Sanur

On Sanur Beach, businesses rent bikes all along the beach path. You won’t walk more than 100 metres without seeing bikes for rent.

You can get bikes with kids in the back, regular push bikes, and electric bikes that make riding less strenuous in the heat of Sanur. Your best bet is to stay on the beach path to avoid any cars and motorbikes on the streets of Sanur.

Bali Cat Cafe – family-friendly activities in Sanur

Cat cafes have become popular worldwide in the past decade, and Sanur has its own version. This Sanur travel guide for families would not be complete without mentioning the Cat Cafe. 

Bali has a problem with abandoned cats and dogs, and the Sanur Cat Cafe takes in strays, intending to rehome them. A visit to the Cat Cafe in Sanur will help fund their mission to sterilise and rehome the cats and allow kids to pat and play with them.

With the new Icon Mall opening in Sanur, you now have a cinema to take the kids to. The XXI Cinema is on the top level of the new mall.

The cinema features three movie theatres: two normal and one Imax screen. You can catch all the latest movies at the XXI cinema with tickets starting at just 50,000 IDR. This is such a great addition for families in Sanur.

In the southeast corner of Bali Island, Sanur (pronounced sah-noor) lies opposite Denpasar, Bali’s main city centre, in Indonesia.

The Sanur Region encompasses Sanur Beach, Jalan Danau Tamblingan (Sanur’s main street), the Ngurah Rai Bypass, and a significant portion of land west of the Bypass.

Have a Craft Beer

Head to the Sanur Beer Garden to try several locally brewed craft beers on tap. It is a great place for a beer with plenty of seating, live music most weeks, and a swimming pool.

You will also find that at times during the year, sports will be shown on a large TV as well. It is definitely a place to go if you want to hang out with fellow sports followers from your team and the opposition!

Sanur Night Market

Sanur Night Market is held in a small square every evening in front of the morning market building. You’ll find a lively street food scene, with stalls opening after sundown and selling local food.

One thing we love at the Sanur Night Market is everyone is there for great food. Don’t be afraid to ask someone that has delicious looking food where they got it from!

You should also try the little donuts filled with Nutella or jam! They are my favourite and I always pick some up to take on a day trip the next day as a snack for us.

Stand-up paddleboarding in Sanur

Explore Sanur’s calm waters and mangroves with stand-up paddleboarding, which is suitable for all skill levels. You can easily hire a board from many beachfront places in Sanur.

Make sure you either have a waterproof bag with you or leave your belongings at your hotel as you don’t want to just leave your things on the beach or at the place where you hired the board from.

Sanur Morning Market

The Morning Market in Sanur starts at the crack of dawn, with vendors setting up inside to sell mostly fresh food, meat, and seafood. You will also find household products and flower offerings.

For some people, the Morning Market in Sanur is a bit different from what they are used to at home. Meat and fish are out in the heat, so it’s not like many places we are used to.

While you are at the Sanur Morning Market have some of the deep fried Banana (pisang goreng) and the deep fried Jack fruit. They both taste amazing.

Le Mayeur Museum – Art and culture attractions in Sanur

Sindhu Beach Market

You will know you are close when the owners of the market stalls start harassing you to come to their shop. All sorts of clothes, bags, and souvenirs are available, so bargain hard for a good price here.

If you don’t like haggling for a price and you prefer a fixed price shop in Sindhu Beach Market, try Jeny’s. She is on the right hand side of the market about half way up. Shop number 29. There is a small concrete sign out front of the shop.

Hire a jet-ski

Get ready for real fun and experience the thrill of jet skiing at Sanur Beach. You will find several rental shops offering the activity along the shore.

Before you take off make sure you see if there is any damage to the jet ski. There have been issues with people being accused of causing damage to the jet ski when they are on it, so please just be aware.

Blanjong Temple

The temple displays Bali’s oldest artefact, a stone pillar with Sanskrit inscriptions that dates to 914 CE, which testifies to the contacts between Bali, Java, and the Indian subcontinent. The Belanjong Temple is in South Sanur on Jl. Danau Poso, just past the Sanur Beer Garden.

Sindu Dwarawati Turtle Conservation Centre

Located on the beach path at Sindhu Beach is a small turtle conservation centre where turtles are kept in tanks while recuperating before being released into the ocean.

Big Garden Corner – Hidden gems and local attractions in Sanur

The Big Garden Corner features various attractions, including a butterfly park, stone sculptures, and a small waterpark. People come here for the photos of sculptures, the food, and the splash park for kids.

You can also do a tea tasting. If you would like that it is usually part of your ticket price. It is a good way to sit down half way round and have a rest.

Go swimming at Sanur Beach

Sanur Beach is known for its calm, shallow waters, making it an ideal area for swimming, especially suitable for families with children. Late in the afternoon, plenty of locals enjoy the cool waters.

Do high tea in Sanur

You will find a few places in Sanur that offer high tea. One of the most popular places to enjoy your spread of small sandwiches, cakes, pastries, tea and coffee is the Intercontinental Hotel or the Byrd House on the beachfront.

Hire a scooter in Sanur

Many people associate Bali with hiring a scooter. A scooter provides you more freedom to explore Sanur and Bali than ever. With the traffic in Bali, we don’t recommend this if you have no prior experience.

Hire a sunbed – Relaxing activities for a day in Sanur Bali

If you are not lucky enough to stay at one of the resorts along the beach, you may want to enquire about hiring a sunbed from them. Most beachfront hotels are happy to hire sunbeds and provide you with access to their swimming pools if you purchase a day pass.

You will also find some beds have a sign on the back with a Whatsapp number you can call to arrange the hire of them.

Go on a beach walk or jog

Enjoy a 6-kilometre beach path for walking, jogging, and biking. The beachfront path offers scenic views and access to beach clubs. The path starts near Matahari Terbit Beach near Sanur Harbour in the north and finishes at Merthasari Beach on the southeast coast of Bali.

There are many ice cream places in Sanur selling excellent gelato. Channel your inner Italian and order one of the many flavours on offer as you stroll the streets or the beach in Sanur.

Massimos at the south end of J.L. Danau Tamblingan is the standout place to grab a gelato. Forketta at the Northern end of Danau Tamblingan also has some amazing gelato in Sanur.

Sanur is well known in Bali for its amazing sunrises. As the sun appears, the colours dance off the water. You must be on the beach around 5.30 am to catch the best Sanur sunrises. This is one of the best things to do in Sanur.

Grab a drink at a Rooftop Bar

There is no better way than to spend a few hours late in the day at a rooftop bar in Sanur. Head to the Bar on the Rooftop in the Artohotel or the Tree Bar at the Maya Resort.

You do not need to stay there to grab a cocktail, beer, or food. Just roll in and enjoy the views.

Attend a free yoga class

Do you love yoga, or maybe you want to try it out for the first time while in Sanur? Sanur’s best thing to do is free yoga every Tuesday and Thursday at 4.30 p.m. at Hyatt Beach (in front of the Hyatt Hotel) for all visitors.

Do some shopping

Sanur may not be the shopping mecca that Kuta is, but you will find plenty of boutique shops along its streets. You can easily find clothing, leather goods, jewellery, fake brand products, and more.

Recently opened in 2024 is the brand new Icon shopping mall for that Western shopping feel.

Attend the kite festival

You will often see kites in the air all around Bali at certain times of the year. The Bali Kite Festival is an annual festival held on the island from July to October.

We are not talking about small kites. We are talking about huge monster-size kits in all shapes and colours.

Have a beach picnic

You will find wooden gazebos or Joglo houses all along Sanur Beach. These make a great place to relax and enjoy food in the shade on the water’s edge. They are usually located on a man-made platform and are a great place to enjoy a picnic.

Go fishing in Sanur

Enjoy fishing off the beach. When I say off the beach, I usually mean wading out to waist-deep water to get to a better spot. You can also join boat tours for a more extensive fishing experience further offshore from Sanur Beach.

After you dry off, head to the Omma Day Club, which overlooks the river and waterfall, for a light meal or refreshing drink. With its stunning, cascading water, Tegenungan should be a part of any Bali itinerary.

After returning to your Sanur accommodation, you should try local craft beer at the Sanur Beer Garden on Jalan Danau Poso. You can also opt for dinner here. If not, there are plenty of options around it, with some bars or warungs if you’d like to grab a local style meal, socialise a bit more or watch a game.

After that, stop at Massimo’s for some of the best gelato in Sanur. Massimo’s is among the best places to get ice cream and coffee on your Bali trip. Watch the line…it can get long!

*Top Tip: You pay for the ice cream at the till and then wait until your name is called. There is usually enough time while you wait to pick the ice cream flavours you would like. Always get two scoops minimum!

Day 3 Sanur travel guide itinerary: Temple Tour and beach time

Sanur is home to several temples that glimpse Bali’s rich cultural heritage. Start your temple tour by visiting Pura Blanjong, a 10th-century temple known for its inscriptions on a stone pillar. Next, head to Pura Dalem Pengembak, a temple dedicated to the goddess of death.

End your temple tour with a visit to Pura Segara, a small Hindu temple on the beach. Enjoy the Balinese architecture and wood carvings while exploring the temples of Sanur.
