The Palm Garden Hotel sits on Jl. Kusuma Sari in South Sanur, tucked behind high walls away from the main road. It is a mid-range hotel that suits couples, singles and families who want a clean, comfortable base in a good location without paying resort prices. Semawang Beach is about a 5 minute walk away and the restaurants and shops on Jalan Danau Tamblingan are just around the corner.

Quick verdict — who is the Palm Garden Hotel for?

The Palm Garden Hotel is a good choice if you want a clean, well-located mid-range hotel in Sanur and are not fussed about modern decor or resort-style facilities. The rooms are tidy and comfortable with an aging Balinese decor. The hotel pool is large and suits families with kids. The location is hard to beat for the price. Beach, restaurants and the beach path are all within a few minutes walking distance.

It is not in the same category as the Artotel or the Holiday Inn which sit on either side of the Palm Garden. Both of those are newer, with more facilities but at a higher price point. If you want something in between budget homestays and those hotels, Palm Garden will definitely suit you.

The rooms at Palm Garden Hotel

Rooms are decorated in traditional Balinese style with cane furniture and local prints. The style is dated, but some people like that. The bed was one of the bigger ones we have come across in Bali, two singles pushed together, and really comfortable to sleep in.

The bathroom is was big, much bigger than most mid priced hotels in Sanur, it had a walk-in shower and a separate bathtub. The room also has a flat-screen TV with a few different international channels and a near full-size fridge, not your typically two shelf bar fridge. Outside your room there is a private patio with two chairs and a small table, which is a good spot to sit in the morning or evening. We watched a ripper storm from there on night.

Most rooms have a garden view. Guests on the second floor get a garden and pool view which is worth requesting if available. Our room was booked as a Deluxe Garden View and was good enough for what we require out of a hotel room in Sanur.

Pool and facilities

The pool is large for a hotel of this size and is one of the highlights. It has a step entry with a full-length sturdy handrail which makes it easy to get in and out. Sun loungers are arranged around the pool and the in-house bar is close by for drinks.

The pool suits families with kids well. There is no separate kids pool but the main pool is large enough for children to swim around without getting in the way of other guests.

Breakfast and dining

If breakfast is included in your rate it is served each morning on your private patio. Fresh fruit, pastries, toast, coffee and juice. Its basic but good enough to start the day, the Bali coffee is not for everyone though. Bali coffee typically has grinds in the bottom of the cup.

The hotel has an on-site restaurant serving Indonesian and international dishes including Nasi Goreng and Chicken Satay. The smell of the kitchen is hard to walk past without wanting to order something.

The Holiday Inn next door does a walk-in breakfast that is worth knowing about. The price comes and goes but at times you can get a buffet breakfast there starting for 150,000IDR. Popular places to eat like Massimos Italian Restaurant and the Fire Station are both just around the corner. For those that like a drink, The Sanur Beer Garden is five minutes away and the Artotel next door has a rooftop bar.

Location — how far is Palm Garden Hotel from the beach?

Semawang Beach is around 200 metres from the hotel, about a 5 minute walk. Semawang is part of the broader Sanur beach area and gives you access to the full length of the Sanur beach path. The beach has sunbeds, watersports and the path connects north to Sindhu Beach and the main restaurant strip.

The hotel sits on Jl. Kusuma Sari between the Artotel and the Holiday Inn, halfway between Jalan Danau Tamblingan and the beach. Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Danau Paso and Jl. Cemara are all within a few hundred metres. Restaurants, cafes, the Sanur Art Market and local shops are easy to reach on foot. One of my favourite cafe’s Stuja Di Pantai is located at the entrance to the beach, its a great place to enjoy the sunrise with a latte.

Palm Garden Hotel vs nearby hotels

The Palm Garden sits between the Artotel and the Holiday Inn on Jl. Kusuma Sari. Both neighbours are newer, more polished properties at higher prices. The Artotel has a modern boutique feel with a rooftop bar. The Holiday Inn is a full-service hotel with a larger pool, gym and day spa. If your budget stretches to either of those, they offer a noticeably more upmarket experience.

That said, Palm Garden is not trying to compete with them directly. It sits comfortably in the gap between budget homestays and mid-to-upper range hotels. The location is essentially the same, the beach access is the same, and the price is considerably lower. For travellers who spend most of their time out of the room, the Palm Garden is a great choice.

Pros:

• Great location. 5 minutes to the beach, close to restaurants and shops
• Large pool suitable for families and kids

• Clean and well maintained throughout

• Traditional decor is dated. Rooms feel older than the price suggests
• No gym
• No day spa
• Not suitable for travellers wanting a resort-style or lively hotel experience

Final thoughts — is the Palm Garden Hotel Sanur worth it?

Yes, for the right type of traveller. If you want a clean, comfortable, well-located base in South Sanur and are not fussed about modern styling, the Palm Garden delivers good value. The rooms are tidy, the pool is large, the staff are friendly and the location is hard to beat at this price point.

If you are after modern decor, a gym, a spa or a livelier resort atmosphere, you would be better served by the Holiday Inn or Artotel next door. But if those are not priorities, the Palm Garden is a solid choice that will not let you down. The dated vibe is real but for us it added to the charm rather than detracted from it.

For first-time visitors this can be confusing when trying to decide where to stay. Where is South Sanur?

South Sanur does not have a hard boundary but generally starts where Jalan Danau Tamblingan ends and transitions into Jalan Cemara, Jalan Danau Paso and Jalan Kusuma Sari. Walk out the gate at Prama or Puri Santrian onto Jl. Cemara and you have restaurants in every direction. Warung Baby Monkeys, Vietnamese at Hanoi by MeVui, or morning coffee at the Bare Bottle.

Is South Sanur a good place to stay?

Yes, if you want a quieter, more relaxed base that is still close to the beach and a good range of restaurants. South Sanur suits couples, families and solo travellers who do not need to be in the thick of it every night. The beach is less crowded than the central and northern sections, the streets are less busy, and it is easier to move around on foot or by bike.

It is not the right choice if you want to be within easy walking distance of the main market strip, the beach clubs at the northern end or the buzz of Jalan Danau Tamblingan. For that you would be better placed in central Sanur. But for a relaxed stay with good food, a quieter beach and easy access to Jl. Cemara, South Sanur is hard to beat.

Puri Santrian

Address: Jl. Cemara 35, Sanur

Puri Santrian is a popular beachfront resort in Sanur that suits travellers looking for a tranquil escape. Rooms and suites range from garden views through to beach-facing options. There are on-site restaurants with Indonesian and international menus, a pool area with sun lounges, and spa treatments for guests who want to relax and rejuvenate. A big plus for couples is the adults-only area within the resort.

Prama Sanur Beach Hotel

Address: Jl. Cemara, Sanur Kauh, Denpasar Selatan

The Prama Sanur Beach Hotel is one of the largest hotel complexes in Bali. It offers rooms and suites with pool, garden or ocean views and five different dining options including an Italian restaurant and a beach bar cafe. The pool area has kid-friendly facilities including slides and fountains. Spa treatments and sun lounges on the beach round out a solid family-friendly package.

Mercure Resort Sanur

Address: Jl. Sudamala No.20, South Sanur

Mercure Resort Sanur is at the far southern end of Sanur and is a reliable option for families and couples who want a consistent standard of accommodation. On-site restaurants, swimming pools, beach access, spa treatments and watersports including jet skis and paddleboards make it a self-contained option. There is also a fitness centre for those who want to keep up their routine.

More accommodation options in South Sanur

South Sanur has a number of other good hotels worth considering. The Holiday Inn Sanur and Artotel are both on Jl. Kusuma Sari and are newer, more polished properties. The Palm Garden Hotel sits between them and offers good value for a mid-range stay. For the top end of the market the Intercontinental Sanur is at the southern tip. Places to eat in South Sanur

One of the best things about staying in South Sanur is the food. Jl. Cemara and the surrounding streets have a solid mix of local warungs, international restaurants and casual cafes all within walking distance.

Massimos — Italian and Gelato

Address: Jl. Danau Tamblingan No. 228, Sanur

Hours: Mon-Sun 9am to 11pm

Massimos has been a fixture of the Sanur restaurant scene for more than two decades. It serves authentic Italian food including wood-fired pizzas, homemade pasta and fresh salads. The menu caters for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. The gelato is well known. Both locals and tourists line up outside for the ever-changing flavours, and is considered the best in Sanur by many regular visitors.

Hanoi by MeVui — Vietnamese

Address: Jl. Cemara No. 33, Sanur

Hours: Mon-Sun 9am to 10pm

Hanoi by MeVui is one of the best restaurants in South Sanur and one of our personal favourites. It is named after the owner’s mother and prides itself on fresh ingredients and traditional Vietnamese recipes. The menu runs from pho and spring rolls through to savoury rice bowls and good vegan options with tofu and mushroom dishes.

Even on a hot day, try the Vietnamese coffee. It is one of our favourite things to order here. Reservations are not required but may help for larger groups.

Warung Baby Monkeys — local Indonesian

Address: Jl. Sudamala 6, Sanur

Hours: Mon-Sun 8am to 11.30pm

For local food at local prices, Warung Baby Monkeys is the pick. It is casual, friendly and serves good-sized portions of Indonesian favourites. The spring rolls, satay skewers and nasi goreng are all worth ordering. It is a good choice for budget-conscious travellers or anyone who wants a no-fuss taste of Balinese food. No reservations needed. Just turn up, though it can be busy in the evenings.

Sanur Beer Garden

Address: Jl. Danau Poso 36b, Denpasar

The Sanur Beer Garden is one of those places we head to as soon as we arrive in Sanur. It is a tradition. The atmosphere is relaxed and it suits solo travellers, couples or groups who want a cold beer and decent food without any fuss. There is an extensive craft beer list including local and international options on tap. The menu covers burgers, pizzas and Indonesian dishes.

There is also a swimming pool on site which is a genuine bonus on a hot afternoon. Live music some nights and sport on the big screen means it can get busy in the evenings. Check their Facebook page for events and live music nights. The snakebite, half cider and half stout, is worth trying if you have not had one before.

Other good options nearby include Studja Di Pantai, Tapha, The Fire Station and Red Manna. The Fire Station does a Sunday Roast that is worth booking ahead. It fills up fast.

Things to do in South Sanur

South Sanur has its own stretch of beach that is cleaner and less crowded than the central and northern sections. The beach path runs the full length and is good for morning walks, cycling and watching the sunrise over Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan on the horizon.

You can hire push bikes from shops on Jl. Cemara. Blue Wheels bike rentals is a good option. Larger beachfront hotels offer watersports including jet skis, banana boats, paddleboards and surfing lessons to guests and the public. Sun loungers are available for hire on the beach if you are not staying at a beachfront property.

The area also has cultural and nature attractions worth including in your stay. Pura Belanjong is a local temple near the southern end of Sanur. The mangrove forest and turtle conservation centre on Serangan Island are a short trip away. You can see and learn about sea turtles that have been rescued and are being rehabilitated.

Shopping in South Sanur

South Sanur is not a shopping destination on the level of central Sanur or the northern markets but it has a few options worth knowing about.

Sanur Art Market

Location: Jl. Cemara, just past the roundabout on the left

The Sanur Art Market is an undercover market with a few aisles of local crafts, clothing and the typical souvenirs you find across Bali. It is generally quiet which means you can browse without being pressured. Prices are negotiable at most stalls. Bring rupiah and be prepared to barter. There is also a Popular Express supermarket right next to the market.

Nuii Collections

A small boutique on Jl. Cemara run by Sari, the owner, who is warm and welcoming. The shop is air-conditioned, has a small changing room and is packed with clothing and accessories. Easy to walk past and easy to spend more time in than expected.

FAQs — South Sanur Bali

From the moment you walk through the traditional Balinese door into the courtyard at Arena Living Sanur, you get a sense of the place. It is quiet, tidy and removed from the traffic noise of the bypass road out front. It is a mid-range hotel sitting slightly away from the beach and the main strip, which is exactly why it is cheaper than many other options in Sanur. For the right type of traveller, that trade-off is worth it.

Quick verdict — who is Arena Living for?

Arena Living suits couples, families and digital nomads who want modern, comfortable rooms at a lower price point than beachfront or Jalan Danau Tamblingan properties. The hotel is quiet which makes it good for couples. Families will appreciate the pool, the proximity to McDonald’s and Pizza Hut, and the easy GRAB access to the rest of Sanur. The main trade-off is location. The beach is 700 metres away, about a 10 minute walk, and the main restaurant strip is a GRAB ride rather than a stroll. If you want to walk out your door and be at a beach bar in two minutes, Arena Living is not the right choice. But if you spend most of your time out and about and just want a clean, comfortable base to come back to, it works well.

The rooms at Arena Living

The rooms are modern and well equipped, comfortably above what you would expect at this price point in Sanur, Bali. We stayed in a ground-floor Deluxe Balcony room. Worth noting: all room types are called Balcony rooms at Arena Living, including ground-floor rooms which have a terrace rather than a raised balcony. If you have mobility issues, request a ground-floor room when booking.

Rooms include a comfortable bed, wardrobe, desk, fridge, kettle and air conditioning. The desk and reliable WiFi make it a reasonable setup for digital nomads who need to work. Housekeeping serviced our room daily. The private terrace or balcony is a good spot for a morning coffee or an evening beer.

The rooms at Arena Living are more modern than the Palm Garden Hotel nearby. The Palm Garden has traditional Balinese character but the styling is showing its age. Arena Living feels newer and fresher. The trade-off is that Palm Garden is 200 metres from Semawang Beach while Arena Living is 700 metres away.

Pool and facilities

The pool is the centrepiece of Arena Living and it is a good one. Large, clean and surrounded by a sun deck with loungers. There is a small book and games nook near the pool which is a nice touch for a relaxed afternoon.

The hotel also offers laundry service, room service and a safety deposit box. Bikes are available to hire on-site for exploring the area. The staff were helpful throughout our stay and took the Koi fish and chips suggestion from my wife with a smile.

Breakfast and dining

Breakfast is served at the Arena Pub and Restaurant on site. The menu covers toast, sandwiches, omelettes and Nasi Goreng. It is fine. Nothing elaborate but solid enough to start the day. The choice is more limited than what you would get at a larger hotel but the quality is good.

The Arena Pub and Restaurant is a full-service restaurant open for lunch and dinner too. Not just an in-house kitchen. It was popular with guests and outside visitors. The car park was full most evenings. The menu covers Balinese and Western cuisine.

For other options, the surrounding area has McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Warung Babi Guling, Pan and Co. and Naughty Nuris all within easy reach. The full Sanur restaurant guide covers everything in the area. Stop at Bulls Coffee on the way to the beach. It is one of the better coffees in the area.

Location — how far is Arena Living from the beach?

Arena Living is on the Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai road, which is not where most Sanur hotels are located. The beach is 700 metres away, around a 10 minute walk. Jl. Pantai Sindhu and Jalan Danau Tamblingan are even closer and give you access to shops, restaurants and massage places.

The bypass location is why Arena Living is cheaper than comparable hotels closer to the beach. The hotel is not on the beach and is not walking distance to the main Jalan Danau Tamblingan strip. For day trips from Sanur and getting around, GRAB is easy and cheap from this location. The airport is approximately 30 minutes by car.

Pros:

• Modern, well-equipped rooms above expectations for the price
• Good pool with sun deck
• Quiet atmosphere, good for couples
• Reliable WiFi, suits digital nomads
• Full-service on-site restaurant open for all meals
• Friendly, helpful staff
• Good value given location away from the beach

Cons:

• 700 metres from the beach. Not a beach hotel
• Not walking distance to the main Jalan Danau Tamblingan strip
• Breakfast is fine but limited in choice
• No gym or spa on-site
• Limited on-site entertainment beyond the pool

Final thoughts — is Arena Living Sanur worth it?

Yes. If you go in knowing what it is, a well-run, modern, good-value hotel slightly removed from the beach and main strip, Arena Living delivers. The rooms are better than the price suggests, the pool is good and the staff are friendly. Would we stay again? Yes, without hesitation.

If staying on or near the beach is important to you, look elsewhere. But if the beach is something you visit rather than live on and you want a clean comfortable base at a fair price, Arena Living is a smart choice. We recently stayed at the Griya Santrian and found the room quality at Arena Living to be very similar at a significantly lower price. The Griya Santrian is beachfront. That is the difference you are paying for.

It is just a short walk from Sanur Beach and the main street, Jalan Danau Tamblingan. Parigata Resort offered the perfect location for our stay in Sanur.

Accommodation at Parigata Resort and Spa

During our stay, we stayed in a superior double room. The room was decorated in a traditional Balinese style and offered plenty of space for our stay. The room included:

• Private balcony overlooking the tropical gardens
• Mini-bar with only Beer available
• Fridge
• Safety deposit box
• Air conditioning
• Daily housekeeping service kept the room spotless
• Bathroom featuring a bathtub

The Parigata Resort also offers family rooms and deluxe rooms. The Deluxe rooms are on the ground floor, which is excellent for guests with mobility issues.

Facilities and services at the Parigata Resort

The resort’s rooms surround a large outdoor swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers. The pool has various depths to suit kids and adults and a waterfall up one end.

It is a popular spot during the day, so grab a sunlounger early if you want to spend the day by the pool. Pool towels are available for your use.

For those seeking pampering, the on-site Lantana Spa offers a variety of treatments including:

• Hair Wash
• After Sun treatments

The one facility most hotels have these days that Parigata doesn’t have is a gym. If you want to work out or exercise, you can access the nearby Sanur Beach Path for walking, running, and biking or the nearby Paradise Bali Gym.

The staff deserve special mention; their genuine warmth and attentiveness were exceptional throughout our stay. They absolutely could not have been more helpful and kind to us and our daughters.

The dining experience at the Parigata Resort and Spa

While the resort doesn’t have multiple restaurants, it does offer a charming on-site restaurant serving delicious Balinese and Western cuisine. We did not eat there at night, but many people did, and it smelled fantastic.

The restaurant features signature nights, such as Satay nights, where you can have one of Bali’s most popular dishes. You can order food all day and evening.

That morning, we were able to choose from a set menu featuring an array of international cuisine at the Parigata Hotel and Resort.

The resort offered four distinct breakfast options: Continental, American, Indonesian, and a healthy choice, all accompanied by coffee, fruit juice, and a fruit salad.

Location and accessibility

The location of Parigata Resort and Spa is ideal. It is wedged between the main street of Sanur, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, and the beach.

Although it doesn’t have beachfront or direct street access, the beach is a mere 200 metres away, perfect for catching sunrises or indulging in water sports. The resort is located down a beach access alleyway, which makes its location perfect.

Taxi in Sanur Tip: GRAB and local drivers are readily available for day trips and airport transfers to Ngurah Rai International Airport, which is approximately a 30-minute car ride away.

Activities and entertainment near the Parigata Resort

The Parigata’s location provides you with so many opportunities to access live music on Jalan Tamblingan. Places like the White Orchid, Casablanca and Nesa Combi are known to have live music and happy hours weekly.

The hotel has a free pool table in the lobby, and when we stayed there, they organized a movie night in the restaurant area.

The concierge can suggest nearby activities, or you can book tours and attractions through websites such as Klook before you arrive in Bali.

Our overall experience at the Parigata

Our stay at Parigata Resort and Spa was a positive experience, and we would not hesitate to stay again.

The comfortable accommodations, which, to be honest, are a little dated but don’t affect your stay, and the friendly service made it a perfect choice for our Sanur holiday.

The location, right by the beach and close to Sanur shops and restaurant offerings, provided the best of both worlds.

Staying in a luxury resort, beachfront hotel, villa, or homestay offers several advantages. First and foremost, you’ll have direct access to the beautiful Sanur Beach, where you can enjoy the soft sand, calm waters, and breathtaking sunrise views.

This type of Sanur accommodation often features large swimming pools, extensive wellness facilities, and private balconies and is within walking distance of the main street.

Additionally, luxury resorts or beachfront accommodations often provide spacious rooms, excellent sea views, and the soothing sound of ocean waves. However, one potential drawback is that these luxury accommodation properties, such as Maya Sanur Resort, Hyatt Regency Bali, or Mercure Resort Sanur, tend to be more expensive than those located further inland.

You might consider some specific beachfront areas in Sanur, Bali Sindhu Beach, Mertasari Beach, and Segara Ayu Beach. These areas are known for their stunning shorelines and various beachfront accommodations.

The area of Central Sanur is not clearly defined. Still, generally, it refers to the Sanur section between Jalan Danau Tamblingan and the beach and between Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Mertasari. This is where most coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, shops, and other attractions are concentrated.

Central Sanur is known for its long stretch of golden sand that faces the calm and clear waters of the Indian Ocean. The beach is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling, and other water activities.

One of the highlights of Central Sanur is the 5 km-long Sanur Beach Promenade and the shopping opportunities. On the east coast of Bali, you can easily find a luxury hotel.

Visit the Sindhu Market for fresh produce and local crafts, while the Blanjong Temple houses the Blanjong Pillar, which has an inscription dating back to 914 AD. It is the oldest historical artefact in Bali.

It is a place where you can relax on Sanur Beach and have fun, as well as learn and discover new things.

North Sanur – the best area to stay in Sanur

Northern Sanur is a beautiful and peaceful place in Bali, where you can enjoy the natural scenery, the cultural heritage, and the friendly people. North Sanur roughly incorporates the area from Sindhu Beach to the Port of Sanur.

The area is about 5.1 km (3.2 mi) long and has a variety of hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions. Some of the popular places to visit in northern Sanur are the Le Mayeur Museum, the Blanjong Temple, the Sindhu Market, and the Bali Orchid Garden.

You can also enjoy various water sports, such as surfing, snorkelling, diving, and kite surfing, or just relax on the white sandy beach. Northern Sanur is a great destination for travellers who are looking for a quiet and serene getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It is also a perfect place for families, couples, and solo travellers who want to experience the authentic Balinese culture and lifestyle.

The southern end of Sanur is also not a clearly defined area, but it usually refers to the section of Sanur that is south of Jalan Mertasari and east of Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai.

Here, you’ll find guesthouses, homestays, and budget hotels in Sanur that provide a comfortable stay without breaking the bank. If you are looking to save money on meals, look for local Warungs where you see locals eating, the food will be cheap but good.

While it may not be as close to the beach, you can still access Sanur’s attractions with a short drive or walk. Most hotels in Sanur will have an outdoor swimming pool if you’re not close to Sanur Beach Bali.

Safety and security in Sanur:

Sanur is generally considered safe for tourists. However, it’s always essential to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secured, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid poorly lit or isolated areas at night.

As in any travel destination, it’s best to stay cautious and follow local guidelines and recommendations during your stay in Sanur, Bali.

Is Sanur worth visiting?

Locals frequently affectionately refer to it as sleepy Sanur, and for valid reasons. For this reason, Sanur Beach draws more families and older travellers.

However, don’t be fooled. In Sanur you will find exceptional places to eat and live musical performances at bars, restaurants, and luxury resorts. Sanur is well worth visiting, with everything just a short walk away.

Is Sanur a nice part of Bali

Absolutely and we think it’s one of Bali’s hidden gems. Sanur has this calm, coastal charm that’s hard to find in busier parts of the island.

It’s peaceful without being boring, beautiful without being overbuilt, and friendly in a way that makes you feel like part of the community, not just another tourist. Think sunrise strolls, beach cafés, and local markets, all at a slower, more relaxed pace.

What Is Sanur, Bali Like?

Sanur is a quiet beach town on Bali’s east coast, known for its calm waters, laid-back vibe, and community feel. If we had to sum up Sanur in one word, it would be easy—in the best possible way. Time in Sanur moves a little slower here, in the most vacation like way.

It’s the kind of place where mornings begin with your feet in sand watching a sunrise ends with you eating local dishes at any number of warungs, cafes and restaurants under stars.

There’s no loud party scene or hectic traffic here, just locals riding bicycles, kids playing on the sand, and travellers like us enjoying a much-needed break. The beach is long and the beach path is perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling, and it connects you to beachfront bars, and resorts with daybeds and smoothies. It’s great for adults wanting to do watersports, swimming with kids, early morning yoga classes and sunset drinks by the sea.

Sanur balances relaxation with just enough adventure. It’s the kind of place where we feel safe letting our teens wander a little on their own, and where we don’t feel like we’re “missing out” by going to bed early. Sanur might not be as flashy as Seminyak or Ubud, but that’s exactly the point. .

Is it worth staying in Sanur, Bali?

We’ve stayed in Sanur more times than we can count and yes, it’s 100% worth it. We have stayed at big hotels like Griya Santrian and small homestays like Hotel Jati.

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with kids, or on your own, Sanur makes a great base. It’s safe, easy to explore, you can be on the beach in minutes or shopping at markets, you can walk along Jalan Danau Tamblingan for happy hour or coffee. Sanur is still be close enough to the rest of Bali to make day trips to Ubud, Nusa Penida, or Seminyak.

Is Sanur better than Seminyak?

It depends on what kind of Bali trip you want, but for us, Sanur wins every time. We have stayed in both Sanur and Seminyak during trips to Bali.

If you’re looking for quitier days, family-friendly beaches, and casual evenings listening to live music and eating gelato, Sanur is perfect. Seminyak is great if you want loud music and beanbags on the beach, late nights in nightclubs, high-end shopping, traffic jams and buzzy beach clubs. We prefer Sanur because it’s easier to relax, and just feels more connected to the Bali we fell in love with.

Is Sanur for old people?

It’s for anyone who wants to slow down, breathe, and enjoy Bali at a slower pace, less people, less traffic, less shops. Yes, Sanur is popular with older travellers

but it’s also great for families, couples, and solo travellers who want calm instead of chaos. Our kids love it here just as much as we do. You’ll find beach yoga, paddleboarding, cycling paths, and great coffee, its not just retirees in sun hats (though there’s plenty of that too).

Which is better, Nusa Dua or Sanur?

Sanur feels more local, Nusa Dua feels more resort. Nusa Dua is beautiful and polished, with luxury hotels, if you want an all-inclusive Nusa Dua is the place for you.

Sanur, on the other hand, has more soul. You can walk to local warungs, chat with shopkeepers, and explore the beach path with ease. It feels like Bali, not just a resort in Bali. For that reason, Sanur’s our pick.

Is Sanur safe at night?

Yes Sanur is one of the safest places we’ve stayed in Bali. We’ve walked the beach path after dark, taken quiet strolls to dinner, and let our teens grab gelato on their own. The vibe is friendly and relaxed, and locals tend to look out for each other (and visitors).

As always, be smart, there are sections of the beach path that are not lite. Don’t leave your phone on the table or your bag unattended, but overall, we feel totally comfortable in Sanut at night.
