The Palm Garden Hotel perfectly caters to value-conscious travellers like ourselves. Offering comfortable rooms at a mid-range price. Did we find a hidden gem in Sanur without breaking the bank? We think we did!

Comfort in every room at the Palm Garden Hotel in Sanur

While our reservation listed our room as a Deluxe Garden View, nearly every room boasted this beautiful outlook. Some lucky guests on the second floor enjoyed a double treat with a garden and pool view!

The room was decorated in a typical Balinese style, with cane furniture and Balinese prints. The bed was one of the biggest we had (two singles pushed together) come across in Bali, and it delivered a good night’s sleep.

The room had a huge bathroom with a shower and a bath, not together but separate. The shower was at a walk-in level, and the bath had a handrail to assist in getting into it.

The room had a flat-screen TV with international channels and a nearly full-sized refrigerator to keep drinks cold. Stepping outside, you have a private patio with two chairs and a small table, which is an ideal spot to enjoy the Sanur sunshine.

One night, we were even treated to a spectacular lightning storm, a dramatic display witnessed from the comfort of our patio.

Facilities at Palm Garden

The Palm Garden Hotel is a great relaxing place, with its high walls separating you from busy streets. You can dip in the large outdoor pool, lay around on the sun loungers, or grab a drink from the in-house bar.

• The reception can help you with finding a laundry if you need it done
• The pool has a step entry but has a sturdy, full-length handrail for entry to the water. Steps are also long and have a good gradient down to the water for easy entry

Dining options at the Palm Garden

The hotel’s on-site restaurant tempted us with the smell of Indonesian dishes like Nasi Goreng and Chicken Satay.

For those with breakfast included, it was served each morning right on your patio. It was a great way to start your day with fresh fruits, flaky pastries, golden toast, steaming coffee, and refreshing juice, all enjoyed in the open air.

For an alternative breakfast, The Holiday Inn is located next door and they do a walk in breakfast starting at 150,000IDR.

The popular Massimos Italian Restaurant and the highly-rated Fire Station restaurant are just around the corner. The Sanur Beer Garden is five minutes away for those who like a drink, while the next-door Artotel has a rooftop bar.

If you are an early riser like me, you can get a coffee and watch the sunrise at Stuja Di Panta, just down the road on the beach, from 6 a.m.

Exploring Sanur with ease

The Palm Garden Hotel’s location on JI Kusuma Sari is ideal for exploring. The hotel is wedged between the Artotel and the Holiday Inn, halfway between the roundabout on Tamblingan and the beach.

Just a short walk from Pantai Semawang, the hotel offers easy access to swimming, sunbathing, and the Sanur Beach Path. The hotel’s proximity to Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Danau Paso, and JI Cemara means local shopping at local stores and eating at amazing restaurants can be done within a few hundred metres.

Activities and Entertainment

While Palm Garden Hotel is a relaxing environment, and simply lounging by the pool with a good book or enjoying a refreshing drink from the bar is always a good idea, Bali offers so much more. On Sanur Beach, you can try jetskis, go on fishing trips, paddleboard, and more.

The front desk staff can suggest nearby activities, or you can book tours and attractions through websites such as Klook before you arrive in Bali.

My overall experience

Our stay at the Palm Garden Hotel was enjoyable. The comfortable rooms and friendly service exceeded our expectations. Its location in South Sanur, close to the beach and Danau Tamblingan (the main street of Sanur), makes the Palm Garden Hotel the perfect base for exploring Sanur.

The Palm Garden Hotel is an excellent choice for a mid-priced 3-star hotel in Sanur. Its comfortable accommodations, dining options, and prime location offered us the perfect location to access the cafe’s bars and restaurants on the beach path and shop at places like the Sanur Art Market on JI Cemara.

Some people may say that the Palm Garden Hotel is dated, which is true. It does not have the modern styled bedrooms that you can book elsewhere in Sanur but the rooms and grounds are clean and safe. For us the dated vibe was not an issue and added to the charm of the hotel.

The exact boundaries of Southern Sanur in Bali can vary, and there is no exact starting point. Generally, South Sanur starts around where Jalan Danu Tamblingan ends and turns into Jalan Camera, Jalan Danu Paso, and Jalan Casuma Sari.

Where is southern Sanur?

Southern Sanur extends southward along the coastline and inland towards the JI Bypass Ngurah Rai Road. The area includes beachfront properties, shops, restaurants, and residential areas.

If someone asked me about the best area in Sanur, I would highly recommend Southern Sanur because of its beachfront accommodation options, located close to shops, and places to eat. You can walk out the gate at Prama or Puri Santrian onto Ji Cemara and have dining options in all directions. You could choose Warung Baby Monkeys or Vietnamese at Mi Vui, and morning coffee at the Bare Bottle

Massimo’s Italian Restaurant in South Sanur has been a mainstay of the Sanur restaurant scene for more than two decades. This restaurant offers a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, perfect for casual dining.

• They serve authentic Italian cuisine, including homemade pasta, pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, and fresh salads.
• Massimo caters to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets, ensuring everyone can enjoy a delicious meal.
• It is known to have the best gelato in Sanur, and both locals and tourists queue outside to try its ever-changing flavours.

While reservations aren’t mandatory, they are recommended, especially during peak season or for larger groups. The restaurant is located on Jalan Danau Tamblingan 228. Massimo offers good value for money, focusing on fresh ingredients and flavorful dishes.

Massimos Tip: If you are dining in at Massimos, you can get your gelato delivered to the table, otherwise, you need to line up like everyone else.

We can highly recommend the spring rolls, satay skewers, and nasi goreng for a perfect, satisfying, and affordable meal. Warung Baby Monkeys is an excellent choice for budget-conscious travellers or those seeking a no-frills taste of Balinese cuisine.

In our case, we have our driver bring us straight here from the airport, It is like a tradition to have a beer at the Sanur Beer Garden as soon as we arrive. This popular spot is famous for solo travellers, couples, or groups who like trying craft beers and good food.

What to expect at the Sanur Beer Garden:

• Extensive beer selection: Indulge in a wide range of craft beers, both local and international, on tap and in bottled options. Try something unique like the snakebite, half cider and half stout beer.
• International and Indonesian Fare: Savour a menu featuring international favourites like burgers and pizzas alongside delicious Indonesian dishes. Don’t miss their unique poolside snack options (availability may vary).
• Lively atmosphere: Enjoy live music on some nights and a relaxed ambience that encourages mingling with other travellers.
• Swimming pool fun (Bonus!): Take a refreshing dip in the on-site swimming pool, a welcome perk on a hot Bali day (availability may vary). Yep, a beer garden with a swimming pool!

Sanur Beer Garden offers a laid-back dining experience. Reservations are likely not required, but the place can be crowded in the evenings when live music or sports are on the big screen.

Here are some additional tips:

• Check their social media pages for live music nights or updates on special events.
• Consider their outdoor seating if enjoying the Sanur breeze is a priority.

A visit to Sanur Beer Garden (Jl. Danau Poso No.98-38) is a must, even if it’s just to taste some of the local beers made in Sanur.

You will easily find plenty more options for food and drinks in Sanur at places like Studja Di Pantai, Tapha, The Fire Station, and Red Manna. If you’re missing home and home is Australia or England, the Fires Station does an amazing Sunday Roast. Make sure you book in or you will miss out.

Things to see and do in South Sanur

Enjoy the beaches of Southern Sanur, with the beach path making it perfect for strolls and stunning sunrises. Some larger hotels and resorts offer guests and the public water activities such as jet skis, banana boats, paddleboards, surfing lessons, fishing, and more.

You can hire push bikes along the Sanur Beach path or from shops on JI Cemara, such as Blue Wheels bike rentals. The beach here is also cleaner and less crowded, offering a nice view of Nusa Penida and Lembongan islands.

If you are interested in the local culture, you can visit the temple, Pura Belanjong. Don’t miss the beautiful mangrove forest and the turtle conservation centre on Serangan Island. Here, you can see and learn about the endangered sea turtles that are rescued and rehabilitated.

• South Sanur is suitable for bike riding as it has less traffic.
• Sanur Beach is suitable for water sports because of its calm ocean waters.

Southern Sanur is undoubtedly not a shopper’s paradise like Seminyak or Kuta, but it offers local finds and a relaxed atmosphere without being pressured. Here’s a glimpse into what awaits you:

The heart of local treasures: Sanur Art Market

• Location: Ji Cemara, just up from the roundabout.
• What to expect: This undercover market has a few aisles of local crafts and typical souvenirs you will find all over Bali. Generally, it is not really busy, so you can take your time, look around, and barter for a bargain.
• Tips: Bring cash (rupiah) for the best deals, and remember to pack a reusable shopping bag to reduce waste.

You will find this fixed-price shop in Sanur just past the roundabout on the left hand side. If you are staying at the southern end of Sanur this may be one of the only options you have for fixed price shopping.

Nuii Collections

Sari is the owner of the shop and she was lovely as soon as I walked in. I had no idea it was here and it was a great surprise.

It is a small shop jam-packed with items. There is a small changing room, and the shop is air-conditioned.

Beyond the Sanur Art Market:

• Boutiques with a Twist: Scattered throughout Southern Sanur, you’ll find charming boutiques offering a curated selection of clothing, jewellery, and homeware. Look for locally-made designs and unique souvenirs beyond typical tourist trinkets.

Things to Remember:

• Haggling: Haggling is expected at most souvenir stalls and markets. Do your research beforehand to get a general idea of fair prices.

Arena Living offers visitors to Sanur, Bali, a comfortable and relaxing stay. If you stay at Arena Living Sanur, it provides the perfect base to explore Sanur, beaches, restaurants and go shopping.

Accommodation at Arena Living

During our stay, we were in a ground-floor Deluxe Balcony room (be aware that they are called Balcony rooms even on the ground floor). Depending on the room type, the private balcony or terrace provided a delightful spot to unwind with a beer or cup of coffee.

The rooms were modern and large, featuring comfortable beds, wardrobe space, a desk, a fridge, a kettle, and air conditioning. The housekeeping staff serviced our room daily throughout our stay.

Overall, I would say the beds were comfortable, and this was one of the better rooms we have stayed in during our trips to Sanur.

If you have mobility issues, ask for a room on the ground floor.

Facilities and services at Sanur Arena Living

The centrepiece of Arena Living Sanur is the expansive outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by a sun deck with loungers for relaxing and sunbathing.

There was a little nook near the swimming pool where you could borrow books and games while sitting around the pool area.

The hotel offers a full range of services, including laundry service, room service, and a safety deposit box for your valuables.

The staff at Arena Living Sanur was always helpful and smiling, even when my wife suggested that their Koi Fish would make a good serving of fish and chips. This ensured an enjoyable stay.

The dining experience at Arena Living Sanur

Arena Living Sanur boasts the Arena Pub & Restaurant, offering a convenient and delicious dining option. The restaurant serves an extensive menu of Balinese and Western cuisine. The Arena Pub and Restaurant was popular with guests and outside traffic, as the car park was full most evenings.

For breakfast, you head back to the Arena Pub, where you can choose from a set menu with items like toast sandwiches, omelettes, Nasi Goring, and more.

The surrounding area is full of cafes and restaurants offering a variety of choices, including Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Warung Babi Guling, Pan & Co., and Naughty Nuris.

Location and accessibility at Arena Living

Arena Living Sanur is located on the JI Sanur Bypass Road. Although this is not an area where most hotels are located, its access to the beach and shops was still very good.

Sanur Beach is just a short 500-metre walk away; make sure you stop at Bulls Coffee on the way for some of the best coffee in Sanur.

J.I. Pantai Sindu and Jalan Danau Tamblingan are even closer, where you can do some shopping or grab a massage. The hotel’s location makes it easily accessible for day trips with Bali drivers and taxis to any location. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is approximately a 30-minute car ride away.

Activities and Entertainment:

As we mentioned earlier, the hotel has a fantastic swimming pool and relaxing area. You can also hire a bike on-site to explore the area.

The rooms have TVs to watch; maybe bring an Amazon Fire Stick so you can access streaming services from home.

The friendly staff can suggest nearby activities, or you can book tours and attractions through websites such as Klook before you arrive in Bali.

Our overall experience at Arena Living Sanur:

Our stay at Arena Living Sanur was really good. The hotel’s home-style atmosphere, comfortable accommodations, and friendly service made it a real getaway in Sanur.

As I said earlier, the rooms were excellent, and the pool was inviting. The convenience of an onsite full-service restaurant (not just an in-house kitchen) was excellent if you didn’t want to stray too far for dinner.

Pros of the Arena Living Hotel Sanur:

• Home-style atmosphere with comfortable rooms
• Inviting pool area
• Attentive and friendly staff
• Delicious on-site dining

Cons of staying at Arena Living Sanur:

• Limited on-site entertainment options (activities can be arranged or found nearby)
• No spa on-site (treatments can be arranged upon request)
• Maybe a little far from the beach for some

Sanur tip: We recently stayed at the Griya Santrian, and we found the rooms very similar at Arena Living, but with a huge price difference. If staying on the beach does not interest you this could be your place in Sanur!

Arena Living Sanur is a good choice for travellers seeking a comfortable and affordable stay in Sanur. Its relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and convenient location make it ideal for couples and families in Sanur.

The hotel is clean and presents well at a good price, which is all you can ask for in Bali. Would we stay again? Yeah, I would stay at Arena Living again.

It is just a short walk from Sanur Beach and the main street, Jalan Danau Tamblingan. Parigata Resort offered the perfect location for our stay in Sanur.

Accommodation at Parigata Resort and Spa

During our stay, we stayed in a superior double room. The room was decorated in a traditional Balinese style and offered plenty of space for our stay. The room included:

• King-sized bed (twin configuration available)
• Private balcony overlooking the tropical gardens
• Mini-bar with only Beer available
• Fridge
• Safety deposit box
• Air conditioning
• Daily housekeeping service kept the room spotless
• Bathroom featuring a bathtub

The Parigata Resort also offers family rooms and deluxe rooms. The Deluxe rooms are on the ground floor, which is excellent for guests with mobility issues.

Facilities and services at the Parigata Resort

The resort’s rooms surround a large outdoor swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers. The pool has various depths to suit kids and adults and a waterfall up one end.

It is a popular spot during the day, so grab a sunlounger early if you want to spend the day by the pool. Pool towels are available for your use.

For those seeking pampering, the on-site Lantana Spa offers a variety of treatments including:

• Body Massages
• Body Scrubs
• Manicure
• Pedicure
• Hair Wash
• After Sun treatments

The one facility most hotels have these days that Parigata doesn’t have is a gym. If you want to work out or exercise, you can access the nearby Sanur Beach Path for walking, running, and biking or the nearby Paradise Bali Gym.

The dining experience at the Parigata Resort and Spa

While the resort doesn’t have multiple restaurants, it does offer a charming on-site restaurant serving delicious Balinese and Western cuisine. We did not eat there at night, but many people did, and it smelled fantastic.

The restaurant features signature nights, such as Satay nights, where you can have one of Bali’s most popular dishes. You can order food all day and evening.

That morning, we were able to choose from a set menu featuring an array of international cuisine at the Parigata Hotel and Resort.

The resort offered four distinct breakfast options: Continental, American, Indonesian, and a healthy choice, all accompanied by coffee, fruit juice, and a fruit salad.

Location and accessibility

The location of Parigata Resort and Spa is ideal. It is wedged between the main street of Sanur, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, and the beach.

Although it doesn’t have beachfront or direct street access, the beach is a mere 200 metres away, perfect for catching sunrises or indulging in water sports. The resort is located down a beach access alleyway, which makes its location perfect.

Taxi in Sanur Tip: GRAB and local drivers are readily available for day trips and airport transfers to Ngurah Rai International Airport, which is approximately a 30-minute car ride away.

Activities and entertainment near the Parigata Resort

The Parigata’s location provides you with so many opportunities to access live music on Jalan Tamblingan. Places like the White Orchid, Casablanca and Nesa Combi are known to have live music and happy hours weekly.

The hotel has a free pool table in the lobby, and when we stayed there, they organized a movie night in the restaurant area.

The concierge can suggest nearby activities, or you can book tours and attractions through websites such as Klook before you arrive in Bali.

Our overall experience at the Parigata

Our stay at Parigata Resort and Spa was a positive experience, and we would not hesitate to stay again.

The comfortable accommodations, which, to be honest, are a little dated but don’t affect your stay, and the friendly service made it a perfect choice for our Sanur holiday.

The location, right by the beach and close to Sanur shops and restaurant offerings, provided the best of both worlds.

• Comfortable and clean rooms with balconies
• Inviting pool area
• Attentive and friendly staff

However, one potential drawback is that these luxury accommodation properties, such as Maya Sanur Resort, Hyatt Regency Bali, or Mercure Resort Sanur, tend to be more expensive than those located further inland.

The area of Central Sanur is not clearly defined. Still, generally, it refers to the Sanur section between Jalan Danau Tamblingan and the beach and between Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Mertasari. This is where most coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, shops, and other attractions are concentrated.

Central Sanur is known for its long stretch of golden sand that faces the calm and clear waters of the Indian Ocean. The beach is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling, and other water activities.

One of the highlights of Central Sanur is the 5 km-long Sanur Beach Promenade and the shopping opportunities. On the east coast of Bali, you can easily find a luxury hotel.

Visit the Sindhu Market for fresh produce and local crafts, while the Blanjong Temple houses the Blanjong Pillar, which has an inscription dating back to 914 AD. It is the oldest historical artefact in Bali.

The area is about 5.1 km (3.2 mi) long and has a variety of hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions. Some of the popular places to visit in northern Sanur are the Le Mayeur Museum, the Blanjong Temple, the Sindhu Market, and the Bali Orchid Garden.

You can also enjoy various water sports, such as surfing, snorkelling, diving, and kite surfing, or just relax on the white sandy beach. Northern Sanur is a great destination for travellers who are looking for a quiet and serene getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Here, you’ll find guesthouses, homestays, and budget hotels in Sanur that provide a comfortable stay without breaking the bank. If you are looking to save money on meals, look for local Warungs where you see locals eating, the food will be cheap but good.

While it may not be as close to the beach, you can still access Sanur’s attractions with a short drive or walk. Most hotels in Sanur will have an outdoor swimming pool if you’re not close to Sanur Beach Bali.

Safety and security in Sanur:

Sanur is generally considered safe for tourists. However, it’s always essential to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secured, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid poorly lit or isolated areas at night.

As in any travel destination, it’s best to stay cautious and follow local guidelines and recommendations during your stay in Sanur, Bali.

Is Sanur worth visiting?

Locals frequently affectionately refer to it as sleepy Sanur, and for valid reasons. For this reason, Sanur Beach draws more families and older travellers.

However, don’t be fooled. In Sanur you will find exceptional places to eat and live musical performances at bars, restaurants, and luxury resorts. Sanur is well worth visiting, with everything just a short walk away.

Is Sanur a nice part of Bali

Absolutely and we think it’s one of Bali’s hidden gems. Sanur has this calm, coastal charm that’s hard to find in busier parts of the island.

It’s peaceful without being boring, beautiful without being overbuilt, and friendly in a way that makes you feel like part of the community, not just another tourist. Think sunrise strolls, beach cafés, and local markets, all at a slower, more relaxed pace.

What Is Sanur, Bali Like?

Sanur is a quiet beach town on Bali’s east coast, known for its calm waters, laid-back vibe, and community feel. If we had to sum up Sanur in one word, it would be easy—in the best possible way. Time in Sanur moves a little slower here, in the most vacation like way.

It’s the kind of place where mornings begin with your feet in sand watching a sunrise ends with you eating local dishes at any number of warungs, cafes and restaurants under stars.

There’s no loud party scene or hectic traffic here, just locals riding bicycles, kids playing on the sand, and travellers like us enjoying a much-needed break. The beach is long and the beach path is perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling, and it connects you to beachfront bars, and resorts with daybeds and smoothies. It’s great for adults wanting to do watersports, swimming with kids, early morning yoga classes and sunset drinks by the sea.

Sanur balances relaxation with just enough adventure. It’s the kind of place where we feel safe letting our teens wander a little on their own, and where we don’t feel like we’re “missing out” by going to bed early. Sanur might not be as flashy as Seminyak or Ubud, but that’s exactly the point. .

Is it worth staying in Sanur, Bali?

We’ve stayed in Sanur more times than we can count and yes, it’s 100% worth it. We have stayed at big hotels like Griya Santrian and small homestays like Hotel Jati.

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with kids, or on your own, Sanur makes a great base. It’s safe, easy to explore, you can be on the beach in minutes or shopping at markets, you can walk along Jalan Danau Tamblingan for happy hour or coffee. Sanur is still be close enough to the rest of Bali to make day trips to Ubud, Nusa Penida, or Seminyak.

Is Sanur better than Seminyak?

It depends on what kind of Bali trip you want, but for us, Sanur wins every time. We have stayed in both Sanur and Seminyak during trips to Bali.

If you’re looking for quitier days, family-friendly beaches, and casual evenings listening to live music and eating gelato, Sanur is perfect. Seminyak is great if you want loud music and beanbags on the beach, late nights in nightclubs, high-end shopping, traffic jams and buzzy beach clubs. We prefer Sanur because it’s easier to relax, and just feels more connected to the Bali we fell in love with.

Is Sanur for old people?

It’s for anyone who wants to slow down, breathe, and enjoy Bali at a slower pace, less people, less traffic, less shops. Yes, Sanur is popular with older travellers

but it’s also great for families, couples, and solo travellers who want calm instead of chaos. Our kids love it here just as much as we do. You’ll find beach yoga, paddleboarding, cycling paths, and great coffee, its not just retirees in sun hats (though there’s plenty of that too).

Which is better, Nusa Dua or Sanur?

Sanur feels more local, Nusa Dua feels more resort. Nusa Dua is beautiful and polished, with luxury hotels, if you want an all-inclusive Nusa Dua is the place for you.

Sanur, on the other hand, has more soul. You can walk to local warungs, chat with shopkeepers, and explore the beach path with ease. It feels like Bali, not just a resort in Bali. For that reason, Sanur’s our pick.

Is Sanur safe at night?

Yes Sanur is one of the safest places we’ve stayed in Bali. We’ve walked the beach path after dark, taken quiet strolls to dinner, and let our teens grab gelato on their own. The vibe is friendly and relaxed, and locals tend to look out for each other (and visitors).

As always, be smart, there are sections of the beach path that are not lite. Don’t leave your phone on the table or your bag unattended, but overall, we feel totally comfortable in Sanut at night.
