Essential weather in Sanur Bali guide: What you need to know

The weather in Sanur, Bali is one of the most common questions we get asked. The weather is the number one thing that can affect any holiday. In Bali the forecast often says rain — should you be worried? The short answer is no — and in this article we explain why, with a month-by-month breakdown of what to actually expect.

What is the weather like in Sanur Bali?

Sanur’s location just south of the equator means it is warm all year round — there is no cold season. Bali being an island surrounded by the ocean keeps temperatures steady and provides a moderate breeze most days. These same features also contribute to Bali’s humidity which can make it feel hotter than the thermometer suggests.

Bali has a monsoon climate with two distinct seasons — wet season which runs from November to April, and dry season from May to October. But the difference between the two is less dramatic in Sanur than you might think. We have been to Bali during both seasons a number of times. Rain in Sanur tends to come in short bursts rather than all-day downpours, and the mornings are almost always clear and sunny no matter which season it is.

Sanur’s daily weather pattern

  • Morning (6–10am) — almost always the clearest part of the day. The sun rises over the beach in Sanur giving it the best sunrises in Bali. Air is cool, which is a relief before the heat builds. This is the best time for a beach walk or bike ride along the beach path.
  • Midday (10am–2pm) — temperature climbs to around 30°C. The ocean breeze keeps it comfortable if you’re on the beach but humidity makes it feel warmer. Best time to be in the pool or at a shaded cafe.
  • Afternoon (2–5pm) — the most likely time for rain, especially in wet season. Showers in Sanur are typically short and sharp — often 20 to 30 minutes — and clear up quickly. Unlike inland Bali where rain can last for hours, Sanur’s coastal location means it moves through faster. We have seen it rain so hard and fast and then it’s over — it’s amazing really.

Sanur Bali weather by month — the honest guide

Here is what we have experienced across multiple trips to Sanur at different times of year — not just what the forecast says, but what it actually feels like on the ground.

January — wet season

One of the wetter months. Expect afternoon showers most days, higher humidity and occasional heavier rain. Mornings are still usually fine for the beach. Crowds are lower than peak season and prices reflect this. If you don’t mind the occasional wet afternoon, January is genuinely good value.

February — wet season

Similar to January — one of the rainier months of the year. Humidity is high. Showers are mostly in the afternoon. Sanur’s beachfront position means the rain clears faster than in Ubud or the mountains. Low crowds, lower prices especially since school holidays are over in Australia.

March — wet season transitioning

Rain begins to ease towards the end of March. Still expect afternoon showers early in the month. A good time to visit the island as it is quieter, prices are still lower and you start to get more rain-free days as the month progresses.

April — shoulder season

The transition month. Rain decreases noticeably. You can still get afternoon showers but they become less frequent. Mornings are reliably clear. A good time to visit — the crowds from dry season have not arrived yet and the weather is improving.

May — dry season begins

The start of the dry season. Noticeably less rain, lower humidity and clearer skies. Temperatures stay warm. A great month to visit — good weather without the peak season crowds of July and August. One of our personal favourite months.

June — dry season

Reliable dry weather. On a recent trip to Sanur in June the forecast said rain most days but it only really rained one day in the morning and a few times overnight. Mornings on the beach path are stunning. Temperatures are warm without being oppressively hot. Crowds start to increase as we head towards the peak season.

July — peak dry season

One of the best weather months but also the busiest. July is peak tourist season in Bali. Expect reliably dry days, clear skies and the best beach conditions of the year. Book accommodation in Sanur and tours well in advance. Prices are at their highest. Worth it for the weather — just be prepared for busier restaurants and more crowded beach paths.

August — peak dry season

The same as July — excellent weather, peak crowds, peak prices. August/September is school holiday season for Australian families so Sanur is notably busier. Accommodation in Sanur books out quickly. If you are travelling with kids and the school holidays align, this is a fantastic time — just plan ahead.

September — dry season

Crowds ease off as schools go back but the weather stays excellent. September is one of the best value months to visit Sanur — great weather, lower prices and fewer tourists. Highly recommended.

October — dry season ending

Weather is still mostly dry with occasional showers creeping back in. Temperatures remain warm. Another good shoulder month — the crowds from peak season have gone and the heavy wet season rain has not arrived yet.

November — wet season begins

The wet season starts to kick in. Rain increases, humidity rises and afternoon showers become more regular. Still very much an enjoyable time to visit Sanur — just expect more cloud cover and the occasional heavy afternoon shower. Prices drop and crowds thin out significantly.

December — wet season

One of the rainier months but also coincides with the Christmas and New Year holiday rush which pushes prices up despite the weather. The rain is mostly afternoon showers that clear up. Mornings are still generally fine. A popular time for Australian families — just be aware it is busier and more expensive than the shoulder months despite the wetter conditions.

We have been to Sanur in both wet and dry season and enjoyed both. The wet season rain in Sanur is nothing like the all-day grey drizzle you might be used to at home. It comes in hard for 20 minutes and then the sun is back out. The mornings are nearly always good.

Mark — Things to Do in Sanur

Does it rain all day in Sanur Bali?

No — and this is probably the biggest misconception about Sanur weather. Rain in Sanur is almost never an all-day event. The typical pattern is clear mornings, building cloud in the early afternoon and a short sharp shower between 2pm and 5pm that clears within 30 minutes. We have been caught in heavy rain in Sanur that ended before we finished our coffee.

The exception is during the peak wet season months of January and February when occasional longer rain periods do happen. But even then, the mornings are usually clear enough for beach walks and activities.

What is the humidity like in Sanur Bali?

Humidity is a real factor in Sanur and worth understanding before you go. Average humidity sits around 75–85% year round — higher during wet season, slightly lower in the dry season. This means even on a 29°C day it can feel warmer than you expect because the air is thick with moisture. Be prepared to sweat — black clothing makes it less noticeable.

The ocean breeze in Sanur helps — particularly on the beach path and at beachfront restaurants. Inland Sanur without a breeze can feel noticeably more uncomfortable. For most visitors the humidity is manageable but worth factoring in if you are prone to feeling the heat. Light, loose natural fabrics are your best friend. Cotton and linen over synthetics.

Sanur Tip

The Sanur beach path gets a reliable ocean breeze most mornings — easily the most comfortable place to walk or cycle in the heat. If you are going to do any real walking or sightseeing, do it before 10am. After midday the combination of heat and humidity makes walking around inland Sanur a real effort.

Best time to visit Sanur Bali for weather

The best months for weather in Sanur are May, June, September and October — the shoulder months on either side of peak season. You get the dry season conditions without the July/August crowds and prices. If you can only travel in school holidays, July and August are excellent weather-wise — just book your Sanur accommodation well ahead.

The wet season months of January, February and November/December are not a real concern to be honest — particularly if you are a midlife or slower traveller who is happy to sit out an afternoon shower in a cafe. The island is quieter, prices are lower and the rain is manageable. We have had some really good trips in the wet season.

Should the weather forecast stop you booking?

No. Do not let a 10-day weather forecast put you off visiting Sanur. We have seen forecasts showing rain every single day of an upcoming trip that turned out to be nearly all sunshine. The forecast apps are rarely spot on for tropical climates where brief afternoon showers are the norm rather than the exception.

We have a small window to visit Sanur most years due to work and travel schedules and the weather has never stopped us going. On the rare rainy afternoon we duck into a cafe, order a coffee and wait 30 minutes. Book your trip and go — the weather will take care of itself.
